Football’s Most Unpredictable Teams

In sports prediction, numbers are everything. With enough grasp of the numbers, sports fans are nearer to certain about the outcomes of a game. Bettors also use these numbers to make better predictions for stakes in football games. But of course, this does not always work.

There are some (inconsistent) football teams whose results consistently (pun intended) break away from what the numbers suggest may happen. Some of these teams do not even conform to any pattern consistently enough to allow predictors to form an opinion.

This article looks at some of the teams and why exactly they fit into this rather bizarre mold.

TOTTENHAM: BRILLIANT THIS WEEK, BAFFLING THE NEXT ONE

The spurs are quite the difficult club to predict. The club's results — and this is regardless of the crop of players or even managers — have swung more erratically than most other top teams in Europe. And this has been the case since 2023.

Take for instance, in the 2025/2026 footballing season about 63.46% of their matches had over 2.5 goals. For anyone wanting the team to deliver 3 goals or more, 64% is simply not solid enough to rely on.

Another 82.69% of the matches Spurs played had over 1.5 goals. The same club, however, conceded 3.76 more goals than expected from the chances they allowed. To put this in summary, Spurs have the penchant to look like an elite club one day and lose to a mid table or bottom table club the next.

WOLFSBURG? A DIFFERENT KIND OF UNPREDICTABLE

Wolfsburg, the German Bundesliga’s occasional performer, are a different type of unpredictable. They are the type of team whose results, at the end of each game, does not represent their play.

For instance, at some  point in the 2025-26 Bundesliga season, they had 21 points when they “should” have had 32.6, if one considers the quality of the chances they created. The shooting produced more predictable results. They scored 39 goals from 38.69 expected goals.

In the same breath, the team’s defence conceded 65 goals from chances that would have produced 55.12 goals considering the math. Unlike Spur, this team’s results do not swing so much. The results do not exactly match the teams performances either.

WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS: THE UNEXPECTED SPOILER

For a bottom ladder club, Wolverhampton Wanderers produced two surprising upsets in February and March 2026. On February 18, Wolves came from two goals down to draw 2–2 with league leaders Arsenal at Molineux.

Sports Mole's pre-match prediction model had given Wolves just a 10.97 per cent chance of winning, compared with Arsenal's 70.99 per cent. The model put the probability of a 2–2 draw at approximately 3.51 per cent. Opta's in-game supercomputer had given Arsenal a 98.1 per cent chance of winning after the visitors went 2–0 ahead in the 56th minute. Wolves nevertheless recovered to secure a draw.

Guess what? Two weeks later, on March 3, Wolves defeated Liverpool 2–1 through a stoppage-time winner from André. Liverpool had been favoured to win, with the pre-match xG Lab model assigning Wolves a 22 per cent chance of victory against Liverpool's 53 per cent.

CONCLUSION

The smarter predictions when dealing with some of the teams is to avoid relying on absolute results. For underdog upsetters like Wolves, bold risk takers may put their faith in them to deliver against bigger clubs with more quality. However, those kinds of stakes are not reliable. Afterall, these teams are ‘Football’s Most Unpredictable’!
